— ABOUT ME

I’m Alma, a filmmaker born and based in Bucharest. Alongside film, I work across advertising, music videos, and related visual mediums, including video-installations, moving between narrative work and more experimental and contemporary forms. My films have been screened at international festivals and have received awards from the Romanian Filmmakers Union, CinemaIubit, Alter-Native, and the Gopo Awards.

I have served on the SMART7 international jury at the Thessaloniki Film Festival and co-tutored film directing workshops at the Ideo Ideis Festival. I have participated in programs such as Sarajevo Talents, Film Plus, Cinema Next, Her Story, Her Future, Transilvania Talent Lab, and Let’s Go Digital. I exhibited video installations at the White Night of Galleries, the Goethe-Institut, and Phramakon, and worked on visual identity and video poetry projects, including the overall visual direction of the Z9 Poetry Festival.

My practice is shaped by adaptability and most of all curiosity. I’m comfortable working across different formats — from story-led films and dialogue to visual poetry, music videos, and commercial projects that often rely on rhythm, editing, and post-production. I’m interested in the relationship between people and objects, people and spaces, and in situations where spaces or objects can stand on their own, without a human presence. I’m particularly drawn to ways in which reality can be stylized, especially within advertising, where I try to approach briefs from a less conventional angle.

I see all these different forms – the film, the commercial, the music video, video art/installations – as mutually enriching, each one informing the others through process, form, and ways of working. For me, cinema is a form that naturally brings together multiple arts — image, sound, rhythm, text, performance — and I approach it as a space of convergence rather than separation. I don’t believe in the automatic distinctions that often place cinema on a privileged pedestal, apart from other visual practices.

Because of this, I respond to the needs of each project by drawing inspiration from different mediums, rather than adhering to fixed categories. In film, advertising, or music videos, this can mean blending narrative, visual structure, rhythm, and space in ways that best serve the project. Each format offers different tools, but I approach all of them with the same mindset: to let the work dictate the form and to use whatever elements — visual, musical, or performative — are necessary to bring it to life.
